Our Mandate

Our mandate comes from the girls themselves who by joining girls’ empowerment clubs signal their desire for GCN to lead the holistic empowerment of the girls. We act as a voice for vulnerable girl children through leadership training, confidence building, guidance and advice on education and career pathway, advocacy to legal access and child friendly laws and policies, community education on child abuse and the urgent need for eradication of harmful cultural practices that hinder the full physical and emotional growth of the girl child.

Our impact of the SDGs as an organisation we ensure that our programs, projects and intervention are in alignment with SDGs particularly with the following goals;

Goal 1 – No Poverty

Through provision of Life Skills training for women and adolescent girls especially out of school girls, this is key to improving employability and income-earning opportunities. Also, we have successfully established Village Savings and Loan Associations in some of our targeted communities to support women in starting or building small businesses to enable them to lift themselves out of poverty.

Goal 4 – Quality Education

In September 2018, the Government of Sierra Leone launched a Free Quality School Education (FQSE) programme, we have aligned our education projects to complement this effort. In partnership with UNICEF we have been working on strengthening Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) for in school girls by providing training on MHM, distribution of Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) kits and Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials on puberty and menstruation to enhance their attendance and retention, thereby increasing their learning opportunities and potential.

Goal 5 – Gender Equality

We have been implementing SGBV and FGM programs that addresses root causes of gender inequality through community meetings, inter-generational dialogues, media engagements, advocacy and capacity building training with various stakeholders at all levels to discuss social norms, cultures, beliefs, stereotypes and traditions that negatively discriminate and violates women and girls’ rights.

Goal 6 – Water and Sanitation

Girl Child Network Sierra Leone has been championing the advocacy to improve WASH in schools as this enhances the well-being of children especially girls. It contributes towards healthy and secure school environments that can protect children from illness, abuse and exclusion. WASH in Schools significantly reduces hygiene- related diseases.

Goal 13 – Climate Change

Girl Child Network Sierra Leone through the established school clubs with support from World Children Prize have been raising awareness and educating children about the impact of climate change, encouraging children to look after their environment and for the past 5 years commemorating No Litter Day empowering children to become champions and change makers to clean up and spread the word about the importance of a cleaner, healthier environment for all children.
